NUART FEAT IN JUXTAPOZ

Just received the latest issue of Juxtapoz Magazine (May) and though we knew there'd be mention of Nuart we had no idea that it would be a special 12 page article and amongst such esteemed company as JR, Saber, Steve Powers, Swoon and Ron English.

It's a fantastic read, can't recommend it enough.

We are pleased to announce our very special May 2012 issue, a special examination on the state of public art today. We have published 4 special covers for the occasion, Steve Powers, JR, Swoon, and El Mac, as well as features with Nuart, FAME Festival, Swoon, Powers, JR, an essay by Ron English, and a conversation between Revok and Saber.

In the issue we look at the positive impacts that Public Art has made in particular communities around the world, as well as each artist's specific experience working in the public sphere. We introduce the issue with our mission statement about where we think Public Art can be taken in the years to come, and the positive impact we see Public Art contributed to the United States.

SWOON FOR TIMEOUT

Black Rat Projects is excited to announce that our next exhibition is a large scale installation by New York artist Swoon. ‘Murmuration’ is Swoon’s first London solo exhibition and she has spent three weeks transforming the gallery space into a world populated by giant sculptural figures and delicate paper cuts. Swoon has recently shown at the Boston ICA, Museum of Contemporary Art LA and the Museum of Modern Art New Orleans and an opportunity to see one of her installations is not to be missed. Murmuration opens on December 2nd with a preview evening on Thursday December 1st. Invites to the preview will be sent this week.

THE ARTISTS ARTISTS

A nice little insight into 5 street artists favourite street artists from The Guardian featuring Faile, Swoon, Aiko, Sickboy and Blek Le Rat.

Here's Faile on Bäst.

"We first came across Bäst's work on the streets of Manhattan in 1998. There was something so alive about his art, and the fact that he worked in a variety of media, that really set it apart. Bäst's combinations and appropriation of pop culture were refreshing and raw. Older pieces such as Molotov Dwarf – a man with the head of a Disney dwarf, holding a molotov cocktail – pre-dated Banksy's Flower Thrower and instilled the same kind of emotional contrast through image-pairing. He has an ability to deconstruct mass media in a way that is dirty and violent, yet beautiful and sincere.

His studio work has evolved in an equally compelling direction. Botulism, at London's Lazarides Gallery last year, featured collages of images and advertising, giving the impression of an ever-expanding, media-driven bacteria. The relationship between street and studio is important: Bäst is just as energetic at 2am in an alleyway as he is on the wall of a gallery".

Faile is a New York street art collective, formed in 1999.
