Urban Graffiti Artist Banksy Opens a Pet Shop

When I heard that the controversial Banksy had opened a pet shop, I just couldn’t believe it.
Was there going to be some guy in a ski mask selling rats and cuddly rabbits, or was he just cutting the ribbon at an opening ceremony and would his anonymous cover be blown?
I needn’t have worried. It turned out to be his first official exhibition in New York, at "The Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill, in Manhattan".
The well known Graffiti artist who now sells his studio works for hundreds of thousands of dollars, to people such as Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Dennis Hopper, described the fake pet shop as being about "our relationship with animals and the ethics and sustainability of factory farming".
The works in his exhibition are all three dimensional animatronics, and can be seen through the windows of the store.......

Graffiti Artist Banksy’s Summer Show 2009: Banksy vs Bristol Museum

Home grown hero Banksy is staging his summer show in Bristol: the city where his work started to adorn the wall in the 1990s. This may come as a surprise to local councilors who only found out on Friday the day before the exhibition opened on Saturday 13 June, especially as it is being held in the council-owned City Museum and Art Gallery.

THE REJECTS OPENING SHOW

Well, that has to be the be the longest period we've been away from social media, twitter and this blog for quite some time. Apologies if you've come to expect daily updates but we had the small matter of opening a gallery last Thursday. The inaugural show, featuring Vhils, Evol, Dan Witz, Dolk, Brad Downey, Roa and Escif turned into an impromptu Mediterranean street party that we've only just recovered from. Thanks to everyone who came out and showed their support.

More news over on the FB site.

Right, let's get this blog back on track.

NEW FROM VHILS

Le Mur Paris

Baltimore

Baltimore

Vhils is on fire these past weeks, from Mexico's All City Canvas to Balitmore's Open Walls and now a fresh billboard piece in Paris for the Le Mur project.
Le Mur is a contemporary urban art spot in rue Oberkampf (11eme arrondissement) in Paris, France. It is regarded as a key starting point of the street art movement in Paris, having first been hijacked back in the year 2000.

This piece from Vhils is much closer to his studio/gallery work than usual, it's been a few years since I've seen his billboard street work, great to see it back.

Speaking of which, the last photo is a shot of a new technique that Vhils is apparently developing for his upcoming shows in Lisbon and Paris. Looks pretty special, can't wait to see more.

But first up, we'll be showing a couple of excellent works as part of The Rejects show which opens this coming Thursday here in sunny Stavanger.

Reed Projects Gallery, Salvågergata 10, Stavanger 4006, Norway

Reed Projects Gallery proudly presents “The Re-Jects,” a group exhibition featuring new and original work from seven of the worlds most renowned street & contemporary artists, Vhils, Dolk, Escif, Evol, Brad Downey, Dan Witz & Roa

The show will also feature exclusive very low edition Dolk prints, for details on these and available work please contact sales@reedprojects.no

This, our inaugural exhibition at the new downtown space is the first of several international group and solo exhibitions planned for 2012. And what a selection of artists to kick things off with.

This will be the first time these artists have been brought together in Scandinavia and marks an exciting development of the regions contemporary art scene. We couldn’t think of a better place to deliver it than in Stavanger, a city whose embracing of the Nuart Festival has led to a global reputation for world-class street art that is now discussed alongside the likes of London, New York, Sao Paulo and Berlin. Not least, because each and every artist in this show has produced works on the streets of our city.

“The Re-Jects” show presents and celebrates a culture that over the past 30 years has grown into an unstoppable force on both the streets and more latterly the world of contemporary visual art. An arena that has manifestly failed to represent, reflect or question anything outside the confines of its own hermetically sealed world of museums and galleries for far too long. These artists are part of a new movement with a new message and a new world to represent, reflect and challenge. Unlike most other previous art movements, the impetus for this new message does not come from the annals of art history, but from the fabric of urban life. It has been born from a need to question, amongst other things, the mass appropriation of public space by corporate interests, the rampant and often mismanaged development of our urban environment, and the turbulent economic and socio-political realms of the 21st Century. It’s achieved with colour, humour, intelligence and grace.

As Dan Witz, one of the exhibiting artists and the first person to bring traditional fine art techniques to the streets of New York, states

“As an art student the idea was, if the world was a fucked up place that desperately needed changing, and contemporary art had failed us in this respect, then it became young artists’ responsibility to subvert current art practices (museums, galleries). Taking my cue from punk rock and graffiti I abandoned conventional art making and began working on the streets”.

These seven individual artists, from six different countries, cover a diverse range of genres and styles, from the hard-edged stencil stylings of Dolk and Evol to the wanton “destructive creation” of Vhils, the intricate oils of Dan Witz and watercolours of Escif to the more “interactive” works of Brad Downey and Roa.

The Re-Jects offers an opportunity to explore this dynamic range of authentic styles & techniques honed over many years of both studio and public art practice that we now call, for want of a better word, Street Art. We’re honoured that such a renowned group of artists have agreed to participate in our inaugural exhibition and look forward to seeing you at the show.

VHILS UPDATE. CHINA/MEXICO/STAVANGER

All City Canvas, Mexico City
Vhils at Magda Danysz Shanghai and For All City Canvas, Mexico City.

Without a doubt one of the most accomplished artists working the streets today with a concept all his own. Great to see it transferring so well to studio work.

The two landmark pieces produced for Nuart here in Stavanger are firm public favourites and fast becoming tourist attractions in their own right.

Vhils will also be part of the upcoming "The Rejects" show here in Stavanger in a couple of weeks.
