INCOMING : SHEPARD FAIREY

Shepard Fairey spent several weeks in New York in July 2011 and February 2012, creating and printing the works for his forthcoming exhibition at Pace Prints. In this video, he discusses the ideas behind the works and the printmaking processes that he used. All the works were created at the Pace Paper studio and Watanabe Press in Brooklyn.

The exhibition "Harmony & Discord" opens Saturday May 5 at Pace Prints, 521 West 26th Street, New York.

OBEY THE GIANT

Not really sure what to think about this..the beginning of the end or the end of the beginning ? or nothing of any significance at all. I'll go with the latter.

OBEY THE GIANT. A SHEPARD FAIREY BIOPIC

Based on the true story of Shepard Fairey’s first act of street art, Obey The Giant tells the story of a young skate punk challenging a big-city mayor and the powers-that-be at art school. Frustrated by his inability to gain respect within the confines of art school Shepard sets out to gain notoriety and acclaim by targeting the most powerful man in Providence, former Mayor Buddy Cianci. Risking expulsion and jail time Shepard plasters Andre the Giant’s face over the image of Cianci on a campaign billboard. As word of Shepard’s prank gets out, Shepard learns that art is a weapon and attention is both a blessing and a curse.

Directed by Julian Marshall, a 21-year old student at at Rhode Island School of Design (the same university Shepard went to), pre-production and shooting was already finished. What’s missing is the entire process of post-production. Therefore, the crew is now on Kickstarter looking for some funding to finish the film.

One grey afternoon while exploring my neighbourhood in Brooklyn I stumbled upon some old Nuart friends Sten & Lex. This area on the border between Williamsburg and Bushwick is a little street art oasis where artists such as Shepard Fairey amongst many others have been going big. Check out the area around Meserole and Waterbury st and you'll find great street art, nice small galleries and cafés as well as some beautiful old industrial buildings.

OCCUPY PROTESTER FROM SHEP FAIREY

One of the better images from Shepard Fairey of late "Occupy Protester", produced for the cover of Time Magazine's "Person of the Year" will be released as a limited edition print next week.

18 x 24inches, $60 and signed by both Shepard and Sarah Mason (pictured), the print will be an edition of 450 and realeased at a random tome on January 12. Proceeds go to Occupy Wall Street.

SHEPARD FAIREY'S THE PROTESTOR

Time magazines "Person of the Year" ?. The Protestor. Doesn't seem a minute ago since Shepard Fairey designed the Obama cover for person of the year 2008. Let's hope The Protestor does a better job of it. As much as I love the Obama brand, I think he's proven Politicians are too tied to the money to have any real impact on how people are goverened. Let's hope person of the year 2013 isn't a suicide bomber hey.

HERE COMES THE NEIGHBORHOOD is a short-form Docuseries exploring the power of Public Art and innovation to uplift and revitalize urban communities. The Pilot Season revolves around the Arts District of Wynwood Miami, featuring an array of internationally acclaimed and locally respected Street Artists, Graffiti Writers and Muralists.

HERE COMES THE NEIGHBORHOOD explores a unique juncture in history as a new community emerges and evolves. A progressive urban revitalization campaign is examined in the first person, using this year's new Artists and their commissions as a lens to explore a neighborhood in transition. The Series is framed by colorful overview and concluding episodes, providing the scope of past, present and future. Each episode is accented by images from legendary Documentary Photographer Martha Cooper, who has been capturing The Walls since they began in 2009. Her Photographs will also appear in a Special Edition Art Book "The Wynwood Walls and Doors" set to be released this year at Art Basel 2011.

In late July of 2011, Shepard Fairey and his team headed to Copenhagen for a solo exhibition at the V1 Gallery. We decided to document the trip in hopes of capturing a behind the scenes look into the preparation for the show.

The show itself was a huge success but a lot of crazy stuff happened along the way. The following videos are a very honest look at the highs and lows of the experience.

THE RISE

Shepard talks about the influence graffiti, skateboarding and punk rock had on his life and the ways it shaped his art career. Key moments such as a school trip to NY and the melding of styles by brands such as Shut Skateboards allowed him to develop his techniques. Look out for some classic 90's skate footage as well.

T&J Art Walk Limited is the organisers behind T&J Art Walk for the benefit of Human Rights Watch. It is a London based company run by Katinka Traaseth and Johanna Beer. The two young women met at Sotheby's Institute of Art in London where they studied Art & Business. In fact the charity project started as a school project in form of a business proposal. However, with their common interest for contemporary street art and charitable work they quickly decided that they wanted to realise the idea of supporting a good cause through the sales of art. The choice of contemporary street art was easy as the form of art was traditionally used to express the people's opinion and a political message. Shepard Fairey's new show "Your Ad Here" opens this Friday at Copenhagens V1 Gallery (See press release below). In addition Shep and his crew have been getting up in and around the city with a dozen sites being planned. Seems one particular miscreant is none too happy about it.

“Your Ad Here”, recent works by Shepard Fairey, comprises a broad array of mixed media works on canvas and paper, as well as screen prints, retired stencils, and Rubylith cuts. Building upon Fairey’s history of questioning the control of public space and public discourse, much of the art in “Your Ad Here” examines advertising and salesmanship as tools of propaganda and influence. One series in “Your Ad Here” portrays politicians like Reagan and Nixon as insincere salesmen wielding simple slogans that represent their true agendas when stripped of verbose demagoguery. Another series of works are paintings of Fairey’s Obey “Icon Face” in various urban settings usually reserved for advertising as the primary visual. These works showcase the power of images in the public space, and encourage the viewer to think of public space as more than a one-way dialogue with advertising, but as a venue for creative response. “Your Ad Here” means exactly that… not just THEIR ad here, but you can put YOUR ad here. Additionally, these cityscape paintings contextualize Fairey’s street art as an element integrated in an intentional composition. Some of the works in “Your Ad Here”, such as a group of retired spray-paint stencils demonstrate the simple and direct methods of art application that Fairey has used both in the street, and in his studio practice. All of the works in “Your Ad Here” whether they relate to advertising, politics, or music culture, celebrate art as a powerful tool of direct engagement and empowerment.
